Whether you're downsizing, moving soon, or have inherited furniture from a deceased relative, there are many situations where you may need to put an upholstered couch in a storage unit for an extended period of time. When you place a nice couch in storage, it is normal for you to want it to be in great condition when you remove it. Use the following tips to help protect your couch while in a self storage unit:

Have It Cleaned Beforehand

Couches can get a lot of use on a daily basis, and they are not always professionally cleaned as often as they should be. One of the best things you can do prior to putting an upholstered couch in storage is have it professionally cleaned. Hire a professional upholstery cleaner to clean the couch several days before you plan to transport it so it is completely dry prior to putting it in storage. A good cleaning can help prevent mold growth, deterioration, and excessive dust.

Keep Your Couch Covered

A couch that is going into storage should be completely covered during transport and while in the unit. But don't make the mistake of covering it in plastic -- doing so can trap moisture in the upholstery and lead to the growth of mildew or mold. It is best to securely wrap your couch in drop cloths or sheets before putting it into a storage unit.

Don't Let Your Couch Touch the Ground

A good way to protect your couch while in storage is by keeping it elevated. There may be times where heavy rain leads to water seeping in under the doors of a storage unit, and that water can permanently damage an upholstered couch. Not to mention the fact that storing your couch on the ground may lead to stains along the bottom of the upholstery if the storage unit is dusty. Your best bet is to place your couch on wood pallets so it is several inches off the ground. This can help prevent damage in the event of a flood.

Consider a Climate Controlled Unit

If you're storing an upholstered couch that is quite valuable, you may want to think about renting a climate-controlled unit for just a little bit more money each month. These types of units maintain the temperature and humidity level so you don't have to worry about excess humidity or extreme temperatures warping the fabric or wood frame of your couch.
